After posting this photo on instagram I made a poll asking if people wanted to see the before and after of it. The results were a very loud “YES”! It sat in my stories for a while and I decided it would be beneficial to also have it here. So here it is. The photo features Dahlia Fernandes, a musician from Toronto.
This is how the photo looked right out of camera. It’s so dark it looks black and white. This was also a motion shot (I had Dahlia dancing) so it was doubly dark to capture the motion as sharply as possible.
Our session was pretty early in the day, it was just my settings exposed for the neon sign that causes it to be dark like this. I knew with the camera I was using I could bring out a lot of detail and colours in post.
And the final image!
All the adjustments were done in Lightroom. Brought up the shadows and blacks quite a bit and then played around with the HSL colours and split toning. By changing the whites in the neon to a more blue light it kept her skintones looking like the rest of the session when we were shooting without movement. It adds a nice highlight, I think.
I wasn’t sure what the facial expression would be since I was quite a bit farther away from Dahlia while shooting and she was moving so it was really a stroke of luck that the expression is really wonderful. She did a fantastic job keeping her face calm and serene while dancing.
More from this session later!
